Job of a Saddle Fitting Expert
The Job of an Arion Sellier Saddle Expert: Precision, Passion, and Partnership
The work of an Arion Sellier saddle expert is far more than delivering premium saddles—it’s about building trusted relationships, adapting fine craftsmanship to performance goals, and ensuring that both horse and rider move as one. Each day, Arion saddle experts combine deep equestrian knowledge with technical expertise to deliver truly personalized experiences.
About the Role
At its heart, our job is about connection—between horse and rider, between craftsmanship and competition. We advise clients on new and used saddles, tack, and leatherwork, always tailoring recommendations to the specific needs of the rider’s discipline, goals, and biomechanics.
A large part of what we do is fitting saddles for both horse and rider. We analyze the rider’s posture, position, and balance alongside the horse’s movement, muscle development, and shape. This isn’t just about size—it’s about dynamic harmony. We’re also responsible for follow-up services, trial adjustments, and long-term care of the saddle. And yes, there’s also a healthy share of logistics: coordinating orders, demo trials, client consultations, and after-sales service.
What kind of background is needed for this job?
Our training is hands-on and holistic. It starts in our French atelier, where we learn the full saddle-making process—from leather selection to stitching, from tree shaping to panel flocking. Understanding how each saddle is built is essential to knowing how it should perform.
We study equine biomechanics in depth: how a horse moves, what affects its stride or symmetry, and how poorly fitted tack can hinder progress or cause discomfort. But we also spend time on human biomechanics—how a saddle influences the rider’s seat, leg, and core alignment.
Finally, there’s commercial and client service training. We don’t just fit saddles—we build long-term partnerships with our riders. That means clear communication, active listening, and an ability to solve problems collaboratively.

What kind of person thrives in this role? Any advice for someone who wants to do this?
You have to love horses and love people in equal measure. Many of us come from competitive riding backgrounds—cross country, dressage, show jumping—so we understand the demands of the sport firsthand. That experience is invaluable when advising riders at every level, from professionals to passionate amateurs.
You also have to be willing to travel, to meet clients on weekends, at shows, in barns after work hours. Flexibility is essential. And curiosity—being willing to keep learning, keep adapting, and never assume that two horses or riders will need the same solution.
What are the technical fundamentals of a properly fit a saddle?
A well-fitted saddle should allow the horse to move freely, without pinching or pressure. The tree must clear the withers and distribute weight evenly along the back. We look closely at shoulder clearance, spinal freedom, and even panel contact.
We also assess how the saddle interacts with the rider. Does it allow for neutral pelvic positioning? Does it support an aligned leg and independent seat? A great saddle improves balance and comfort, especially for riders working on technical refinement or struggling with instability.
We often test saddles without pads during fittings—this lets us see the true fit without compensation. From there, we can advise on what adjustments or accessories (like half pads or risers) might be beneficial.

How does a saddle help improve a rider’s position?
A good saddle supports—not restricts—the rider. For example, if a rider tends to tip forward or collapse a hip, the right twist and seat depth can bring more neutrality. For riders with shorter legs, a more forward flap may help. For those seeking stability in jump phases, a monoflap may allow closer contact.
At Arion, we often say a saddle should “teach.” It should correct subtle imbalances without forcing the rider into an unnatural position. Comfort is crucial—especially for amateur riders who may ride after long workdays. But we emphasize that comfort and performance go hand in hand.
